What is cannabis?
Cannabis, or marijuana, is a plant. The leaves, flowering parts or resin from the plant can be extracted and used recreationally or for medicinal purposes.
Cannabis is made up from two components: THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol, and CBD, Cannabidiol.
What is Tetrahydrocannabinol?
The main component of marijuana is THC. THC is the chemical responsible for marijuana’s psychological effects. THC is what invokes the feelings of happiness, relaxation and sociability.
What is Cannabidiol?
CBD is one of 120 different compounds of “cannabinoids” that are found in the marijuana plant. CBD offers tons of health benefits, but it does not induce the “high” typically associated with marijuana.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that causes problems associated with thinking, memory and behavior. Typically symptoms develop slowly over time and become progressively worse. Eventually the disease interferes with everyday tasks.
Linking Alzheimer’s and medical marijuana.
A key factor of Alzheimer’s disease is the build up of protein into clumps, referred to as amyloid, in the brain. There have been studies of THC and CBD given to mice with Alzheimer’s disease. These studies have shown an improvement in learning and a lessening of amyloid lumps.
As medical marijuana becomes more accepted, more research is being done to better understand the effects of CBD oil and the brain.

Although there has been no official endorsement for medical marijuana and Alzheimer’s, the pharmaceutical drugs that are being used to combat dementia symptoms now include antipsychotic, antianxiety, antidepressant and antiepileptic drugs. The effectiveness of these drugs can be extremely limited and carry significant risks.
With or without official scientific date, more people are willing to look into medical marijuana to treat Alzheimer’s and dementia.
How cannabis affects the brain.
Cannabis targets the brain system referred to as the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors The CB1 receptors can be found throughout the entire brain, including the hippocampus which is responsible for our memories and learning. The CB2 receptor is found mainly in the immune system. Medical marijuana’s THC component helps stimulate the CB1 receptors activities once binded to them. This process is what causes most of the effects associated with cannabis use. CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors and help prevent the activities.
