Medical Marijuana for Depression in Florida

The Green Life Health and Wellness is located in Florida.

For centuries people have been using marijuana to self-medicate all sorts of health problems including depression.

Recent studies have proven that there is a link between the body’s endocannabinoid system and depression. This can help explain why many people have been using cannabis in place of pharmaceutical alternatives.

What is depression?

Depression (major depressive disorder) affects over 350 million people across the globe. Depression causes sadness and / or loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. It can lead to a variety of physical and emotional issues affecting a person’s everyday function. Some symptoms include: feeling sad, loss of interest in things once enjoyed, changes in appetite, weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, increased fatigue, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty making decisions, thoughts of suicide, or death. Depression can arise at any time, but on average it first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. There are current treatments for depression, including oral medications and different therapies. Researchers are beginning to explore medical marijuana as an additional treatment.

What causes depression?

Depression is an extremely complex disease. No one knows exactly what causes it, but note that it can occur for many different reasons. There are many factors that could increase the chance of depression, including abuse, certain medications, conflict, death or loss, genetics, major events, other personal problems, serious illnesses, and substance abuse. Depression is not simply the result of a ‘chemical imbalance’.

The history of marijuana.

Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has had herbal medicinal properties since around 500 BC. The marijuana plant wasn’t used for a high, but as an herbal medicine in Central Asia. The cultivation of marijuana in America goes back to the early colonists. At that time, it was grown for textiles and rope. In the 20th century, political and racial factors led to the civilization of the plant. It is slowly becoming legal in many states for recreational and medical use. In Florida it is legal for medical use only.

How can medical marijuana help fight depression in Florida?

Studies from Washington State University (WSU) have reported the reduction in depressive symptoms with just one puff of medical marijuana that was high in CBD and low in THC… Two puffs with any level of CBD and THC led to the reduction of anxiety… at least ten puffs of medical marijuana high in both CBD and THC significantly reduces stress. Alleviation of anxiety, stress, and depression are among the most common reasons why people use cannabis. CBD and THC play a huge role in regulating moods, dampening anxiety, and buffering the stress response.

Scientific studies with real results on medical marijuana and depression:

A study from University of Washington in June 2017 showed that THC exhibited antidepressant-like effects with a U-shaped dose-response.That is, while 1.25, 2.5, and 5 mg/kg were tested, only 2.5 mg/kg showed the antidepressant-like effect for both the FST and the TST. CBD and another cannabis-derived phytocannabinoid, cannabichromene (CBC), also exhibited antidepressant-like effects. As of June 2017, depression or dysthymia is not specifically listed as a qualifying condition for a medical marijuana card in any of the states that allow for medicinal use of marijuana. A recent study surveyed 1,429 medical marijuana users recruited through social media and medical marijuana dispensaries from December 2013 to January 2016 in Washington State about the conditions they used medical marijuana to treat, use patterns, perceptions of efficacy, and physical and mental health. More than half (50.3%) reported they used medical marijuana for depression. In general, participants indicated that they felt medical marijuana improved their symptoms of depression.
